Our Programs Committee is responsible for the legion programs that we run and sponsor. Below are a Some of the programs that we offer.
Laptops for Troops
Our laptops for troops program has donated over 4,400 laptops to our service members serving overseas, recovering at Walter-Reed and helping veterans who have recently come home from service. Computers that are brand new or in like new working condition, as well as monetary donations to this program can be made to this program.
Oratorical Contest
The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.
Boys State
American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high school students. A participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state government. Kiltonic Post 72 selects high school juniors to attend the program and covers the expense along with other local organizations for the students to attend.
Cemetary cleanup
Every year prior to Memorial Day, the Legion gathers volunteers and cleans up foot stones and places flags at all the veterans who are buried in Southington. If you are interested in helping, please email [email protected] and let us know. We typically begin around the first of May and finish up just before Memorial Day.
Emergency assistance
The American Legion Kiltonic Post 72 has provided for many veterans and their families in times of emergency or urgent need. If you are on the brink of homelessness, can’t afford your next meal, or other types of emergencies, our post can review your claim and help you find the right assistance from the national level all the way down to grants from our post.
Veterans in the classroom
The American Legion works with our local schools to connect veterans and students to learn more about our veterans and what veterans have done for our country.
Supporting veterans at the state veterans home
Our post helps with supporting our veterans who are at the facility in Rocky Hill. We host several events a year at the home and donate and fundraise throughout the year to support the programs here.
Supporting our troops
The post offers several programs to help our troops and their families while they are deployed. These services include, but are not limited to: Packages to our troops, laptops for troops program, Christmas parties for military effected children and more.
